What you are really buying, in plain words.

A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is your own private part of a big computer in a data centre. It works just like a computer of its own. It has its own processor cores (vCPU), memory (RAM), storage and internet address (IP address). You get full control (admin or root access), so you can install anything you like. Other customers use the same big machine, but they cannot use your share or see your data.

VPS full form: Virtual Private Server. “Virtual” means it is made by software, “private” means it is only yours, and “server” means a computer that stays on and does work for you. Looking for the Voluntary Pension Scheme (VPS)? That is a pension plan — ask your bank. This guide is about VPS servers.

How a VPS works

A data centre is a building full of big, strong computers called physical servers. Special software, called a hypervisor, splits each one into several separate parts. Popular hypervisors are KVM, Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware. Each part is a virtual machine. It gets a fixed share of the processor, memory and disk. It also gets its own IP address and its own operating system (OS), like Windows or Linux. From the inside, it looks and works just like a separate computer. That is why it is called a virtual private server.

How a VPS works — one server, many private parts

How a VPS works: one physical server split by a hypervisor into four private VPS parts, each with its own vCPU, RAM, NVMe storage and IP address
The hypervisor splits one big server into private VPS parts. Your part is only yours.

Why people choose a VPS

  • It is always yours. Your processor and memory share is fixed, so other customers cannot slow you down.
  • It stays on day and night. Your programs keep running when your own computer is off or the power goes.
  • You get your own IP address. Websites always see the same address, in the country you choose (a “static IP”).
  • You can install anything. You have full control, like on your own computer.
  • It costs much less than a whole server. You pay only for your share.

When a VPS is not the right choice: for a tiny website with very few visitors, cheap shared hosting can be enough. And if one VPS is too small even at the biggest size, you need a dedicated server.

What you get with a VPS

  • vCPU cores — a fixed share of the processor that is always yours. How many you need.
  • RAM — memory that only you use. How much you need.
  • Storage — usually fast NVMe or SSD disks. They hold the operating system and your files.
  • An IP address — the address the internet uses to find your server.
  • Root or Administrator access — full control of the operating system.

VPS vs shared hosting vs dedicated server

Shared hosting vs VPS vs dedicated server

Shared hosting is like a hostel room, a VPS is like your own flat, and a dedicated server is like a whole house
An easy way to remember: hostel room, own flat, whole house.

Choose shared hosting for a small site with few visitors. Choose a VPS when you need a fixed share that is always yours, your own software, a desktop, or a server that runs all day. Choose a dedicated server only when one VPS is not enough. When dedicated makes sense.

VPS vs VPN, VM and RDP

These words sound alike, but they are different things.

What people use a VPS for

Windows VPS or Linux VPS?

A VPS can run either one. Windows gives you a normal desktop that you use with Remote Desktop. It also runs software made only for Windows. Linux is lighter and is the usual choice for websites and apps. You control Linux by typing commands over SSH (a safe text connection). Compare them.

What is VPS hosting?

VPS hosting means renting a VPS from a hosting company, month by month. The company runs the data centre and the big servers; you get your own private share with full control.

Is a cloud VPS different from a VPS?

Mostly it is a name. Both are virtual servers in a data centre. “Cloud” usually means the host can move or resize your server easily. What matters is the processor, memory, storage, location and price you get.

Is a VPS safe and legal?

Yes, a VPS is a normal hosting service and it is legal. How safe it is depends on you too: use a long password, keep the system updated and turn on the firewall. Please follow our acceptable use policy. Security checklist.

Is there a free VPS?

Free offers are usually shared, slow or stop after a short time, and some are not safe for your data. A paid VPS gives you a fixed share that is always yours. You can start with a small plan and move up later.
